Journey to Growing Watermelons in Pots

Hello fellow gardeners! Today, I want to take you on a voyage of discovery as we explore the world of container gardening, specifically focusing on growing watermelons in pots. Yes, you read that right! Even if you have limited space, you can still enjoy the sweet, refreshing taste of homegrown watermelons. Let’s dive in!
I bought a Jubilee watermelon plant, and I’m thrilled to share that it’s thriving in its pot, now boasting three little watermelons.
Choosing the Right Variety of Watermelon
When planting watermelon in pots, you need to look for a compact variety that grows small fruit. Some varieties that do well in containers include:
- Moon and Stars
- Sugar baby
- Crimson Sweet
- Early Moonbeam
- Jubilee
- Golden Midget
- Jade Star
Selecting the Perfect Pot
Choosing the perfect pot, ideally one that’s a 5-gallon and provides ample drainage to support the plants extensive watering and sprawling vines.
Preparing the Soil and Planting
Preparing the soil for planting watermelons involves a few crucial steps to ensure optimal growth. Start by selecting a sunny spot, as watermelons thrive in full sunlight. The soil should be well-drained and rich in organic matter, so mix in plenty of compost. Remember in my pass blogs I talked about used coffee grains, banana peels and eggshells these are great for the soil. Especially the coffee grains have nitrogen to help the plant grow. Once the fruits appear to set, use less nitrogen. After you have planted your watermelon plant, you’ll need to water the plant every day and sometimes twice. Here in Arizonia, I’m watering twice a day. But once the fruit start to mature, reduce the watering. Always check your soil to feel how moist it is to avoid over watering or underwatering.
I will be doing a Part 2 on growing watermelons and maintaining them while they are growing. And of course, posting more photos.
I hope this guide inspires you to try growing watermelons in pots. Remember, gardening is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy every step of the way!
Happy gardening!
